1211[1]It is code* in almost every province that a Ceiling Fan Box is required for New Construction for ceiling fan installations.

  • Where the light fixture or ceiling fan does not exceed 23 kgs (50 lbs) the fixture can be supported by a ceiling outlet box attached directly to the building structure or by a ceiling outlet box attached to a bar hanger
  • For new Construction - most people would not retrofit an electrical box which is already installed and in place in an existing application
  • The customer should consult with a qualified electrician to receive the current and accurate rulings for their area

The Ceiling Fan box is similar to the standard octagon box; however it features 10/32 mounting screws and is 2-1/8” deep

The larger screws are one size larger than what is found on a standard electrical box to help withstand the extra weight of the fan or fixture.

*CSA standard code “Fans and Ventilators” requires that ceiling fans be provided with #10 screws for mounting to a ceiling outlet box. Ceiling outlet boxes specifically designed for this purpose are available in the market and new Code Rules will help ensure that when used, such boxes are installed correctly. This only applies to fans up to 35lbs as with fans more than 35lbs need to be supported separately
